Family of Man

2010
96” X 252” X 84”

The sculpture is a modified ready-made object, a pre-existing Solari sign that was displayed in the South Street Station in Boston for over 30 years. Split Flap signs that used to adorn train stations are very unique analog devices that used to function in airports and train stations throughout the world and they are all being replaced with digital signs.

The Artist changed the text on the sign to tell a narrative of the influence of globalization and how the digital age heralds the end of the modern period of manufacturing and production through a complex relationship of power, natural resources, economics and connectivity throughout the globe. The title of the artwork is an appropriation of Edward Steichen’s seminal 1955 photography exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, “The Family of Man”. The sculpture invites the audience to see a matrix of destinations facilitated by the function and sound of this modern relic which was first exhibited at the Carlos & Rosa de la Cruz Collection in 2011.
