PERFORMANCE W/ PASTOR FORBES
2007
Miami, FL.
Amy Rosenblum-Martin invited me to participate in an exhibit she was curating titled “ Structures & Stories“ at the David Castillo Gallery. “Structure” refers to post-structuralism, physical structures (like architecture & constructivism), and Structure’s of thought (including categories and hierarchies). “Stories” bring “structure” down to earth.
I met Pastor James Forbes while visiting the gallery and realized he was its neighbor, occupying and living just next door. Aside from his apartment, he had enough space for a modest church. His congregation consisted predominantly of his daughter.
Faith is a matter that is dear to my heart and I found Pastor Forbes to be an honest man. For the following two months I attended his congregation and he visited my studio. We worshiped and painted together. The night of the opening he and his daughter performed on-stage to a full house and the paintings were exhibited inside. The church closed in 2008 due to economic hardship.
•All paintings / backdrop were made using paint, glitter and black and white Xerox’s of varying sizes of images of Chartres Cathedral, France.
